Walk to End Alzheimer's
Today in the United States, Alzheimer’s disease is the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. This is why Sigma Kappa is committed to putting an end to Alzheimer’s by creating a major funding stream to the national Alzheimer’s Association for research to find a cure. Sigma Kappa has become one of the nation’s leading private contributors to Alzheimer’s disease prevention, research and treatment efforts. This semester the Delta Iota chapter raised about $18,000 for Alzheimer’s research, as we all gathered at One Mile Recreational Park to walk in honor of those who are fighting or have fought this devastating disease.
Sigma Kappa-tizers is an all-you-can-eat appetizer event hosted at the Delta Iota Sigma Kappa chapter house. This event is hosted by chapter members for anyone at CSU Chico who can buy tickets to the event. Guests are served a variety of delicious appetizers such as chicken nuggets, taquitos, chips and salsa, spring rolls, macaroni and cheese, BBQ wings, mini sliders, etc. Over 400 tickets sold for last spring 2017 year, donating $2076.25 to the Pulse Fund from proceeds from the event! This year our goal is to raise $2,500 for the Sigma Kappa Foundation.
Windchime is our local assisted living facility where we give our time and service in order to raise awareness about Gerontology. We create fun events to interact with the residents such as having cookies and tea, holding a Valentine’s day carnival, bingo, puzzles, and more; the opportunities are endless. They also have a specialized memory care unit, enhancing the need for focus and support on dementia. Every year, Windchime comes and participates with Sigma Kappa in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in October to show their support for the cause. Visiting and spending time with the residents enables the women of Sigma Kappa to build strong connections and provide support and friendship, a value we hold near and dear to our heart.
Greek Week is one of the most exciting times of the year for the Greek community! It is a week-long initiative where all of the affiliated sororities and fraternities work together for multiple philanthropic efforts. Every day there is a new event, such as a blood drive, a can-struction, and a fundraiser for charity. The importance of this program is to highlight the philanthropic spirit that the Chico State greek community embodies. It is not only a time spent connecting with our sisters, but connecting to members of other sorority and fraternity organizations and creating new friendships. Greek week is one of our most memorable parts of every fall semester!
